SPFR also provides EMS coverage for hundreds of special community events throughout the year.  This position works 12-hour shifts assigned to an alternating 2/3/2 schedule - 2 days on, 3 days off, 2 days on (week 1) || 2 days off, 3 days on, 2 days off (week 2).

    REQUIREMENTS TO WORK AS A PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATOR TRAINEE IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT

    Individuals hired by the City as Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainees, as a condition of continued employment, must complete the 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Program and pass the Florida Certification Exam within eleven and one-half (11-1/2) months of appointment to the position; and must also successfully complete call taker, teletype, and dispatch training within thirty-six (36) months of appointment to the position. This position handles incoming emergency and non-emergency calls on an ACD system using a computer aided dispatch system.  Work includes receipt and transmission of radio messages, and dispatching police units to emergency or non-emergency situations throughout the City and surrounding areas.  Employees work rotating shifts which cover 24 hours each day and include holidays and weekends.  This position requires a three (3) year commitment. 

    **The starting pay for the position will be $26.23 hourly (Step 5).

    Hiring Bonus:  For individuals hired into the Public Safety Telecommunicator Trainee position, the department is offering a $1,500 hiring bonus.  $750 of the bonus will be paid upon hire and the other $750 will be paid upon successful completion of call taker training (approximately six months following hire).

    For selected applicants that have recent Emergency Communications experience and/or a current Florida 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification, pay above the entry level will be offered.

Work involves the technical operation, programming, installation, support and maintenance of communication equipment, primarily in vehicles, including mobile radio receivers and transmitters, base stations, antenna equipment and video recorders; ensuring compliance with established Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations; and providing lead guidance, training and technical assistance to other employees. Work includes planning, installs and repairs, automotive technical electronic and signal devices, such as but not limited to; telematics, lights, fuel readers, and other add-on or additional components using a variety of electronic and electrical test equipment, including digital volt meters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, computers and related software, and modulation and frequency monitors; assisting in the evaluation of existing and proposed electronic communication methods; assisting with the development of equipment specifications; and assisting with the purchase of supplies, materials and equipment, including providing recommendations. An employee in this position is expected to be able to perform any and all work tasks and comply with any work schedules, attendance, or duty requirements which may be established by City or department rules, or applicable union contracts. Work is reviewed while in progress through conferences and upon completion.

    This is semi-skilled and skilled manual work using trade knowledge to install, clean, repair or replace various commercial facility components and systems at the St. Pete Pier. The work environment includes both interior and exterior locations; and working on or near the water. The general scope of work may include installation, maintenance and repair using various trade skills including:  testing and trouble-shooting HVAC and other electrical systems; repairing fencing and landscape irrigation components; reading manuals, blueprints and schematics to determine assembly or repair needs for various equipment; evaluating and maintaining landscaping; skilled use of a variety of hand and power tools; performing painting, drywall repair, carpentry, plumbing, masonry and; and conducting preventative and scheduled maintenance.  Work may involve lead worker responsibility over one or more semi-skilled workers on an assigned project as well as serving as a liaison or providing in-field oversight with outside vendors to coordinate repairs, surveys, and other field work. An employee in this class will on occasion be required to report to work outside of the normal shift hours to address urgent repairs, respond to other emergencies, perform storm preparation, and staff special events that may occur outside of the normal shift hours.
